A couple of months ago I took action to get my concealed carry permit here in North Carolina. In order to do this, the first thing you need to do is take a concealed carry class with an official instructor. I chose to go with Concealnc for a couple of reasons: 1) I had heard that the instructor was very good and 2) The price was nearly half what it costs at the local ranges. I have to say that after completing the class I was very happy with the instructor and would recommend him to anyone looking to take the class. All you have to do is register and pay via his website. The class consisted of basic gun safety and handling and self-defense laws in North Carolina followed by some range time. If you don't already own a handgun, the instructor has a 22 lr that he allows folks to rent. After getting your certification you then need to go to the local sheriff's office to fill out the proper paper work, get finger printed and pay a fee. From that point it is just a waiting game.
After receiving my permit in the mail about 8 weeks later, I decided I wanted to become more familiar with laws of other states and as such found the following book: Traveler's Guide to the Firearms Laws of the Fifty States. The book is written by J. Scott Kappas, Esq who is a private practice attorney specializing in firearms and self-defense law. The book, which a new copy comes out every year, covers each state and gives you an accurate, detailed description of the laws as well as the dos and don'ts of the particular state. If you travel at all I would recommend picking up a copy! I've read mine cover to cover for 2012 and plan to get the 2013 edition in the next couple of weeks. Check out the website here.
