I had my first chance to get out into the woods yesterday. My buddy Derrick and I hunted some private land for the day. The morning started with some first day jitters as I strolled by my tree stand in the dark and got set up a bit late by the time I finally realized what I did....doh! This goes to show how making a well marked trail to your stand can save you some time and frustration when getting to it in the early morning dark. However, I did finally find it and got all set before sunrise. I only saw one deer at about 10 yards but let it pass as it still had spots and was wobbly on its legs. It was a great feeling though to know that the deer are there and it got my blood pumping when I saw the fawn; even though it was not a shooter it still confirmed that deer season was upon us! I had to leave in the afternoon but my buddy did hunt the evening. We've been watching a decent 6 point but had yet to see him hunting yet. Derrick had his first chance yesterday evening but was unsuccessful as he shot under the buck. He'll live for another hunt!
Hopefully all of you in states' whose season has opened have had a chance to get out and do some bow hunting. If not, get out there! September is a unique time of year to hunt as the bucks are still in velvet early in the month as well as un-pressured and still traveling in bachelor groups!
