I've had issues in the past where a freezer has been left opened and we have lost the entire contents of the freezer. I've looked around and have never been able to find an affordable solution to know when the freezer contents are in jeopardy of spoiling due to a power outage or being left opened accidentally.

Ken McLoud who has contributed to some blog posts in the early days of Inside Out Outdoors has come up with just the solution I think many of us would find useful. Solidus!

"Finally"

I had one lone goal in the 2014 season and that was to finally get a harvest on video. I had been trying for 3 years prior and just was not able to seal the deal so to speak even though I kept getting closer and closer (I actually videoed Paul from the tree while he sneaked up on and shot a button buck we had come in and lay down, but it just looks like he is shooting at the ground in it). But that all changed in a matter of 2 hours, if that, into my first hunt last year. Watch it for yourself and I hope you enjoy!

Allow me to Introduce Myself...

Introduce our hunting videos that is! It's been far too long since our last post, mainly due to me being plain lazy after long days of work (or on the lake or on the golf course or...) and Paul doing adult things such as getting married and buying a house. That being said, what better way to get back into the blogosphere, so to speak, than with a little video clip I put together last night to possibly use as a intro to any future hunting videos I make. A Hunter's Thanksgiving

My muzzleloader 8-pointer is just one of many things I'm thankful for

As I look over these past 2 months of hunting season, I've come to realize there are many things to be thankful for. I'm thankful for meeting my season goal, capturing a harvest on video, the very first hunt of the year; I'd never been successful the very first hunt of the year in the previous 18 seasons. I'm thankful for that harvest also being a small, chocolate antlered 8-pointer, another first for me as I have a 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 pointer all on my wall. I'm thankful for being able to watch the sun rise and set yet another day. I'm thankful for maturing as a hunter. I'm thankful for already having more than halfway filled the freezer with a doe as well as the above mentioned 8-pointer. Most of all I'm thankful for getting to spend another year hunting with my grandfather, father and friends.

I hope you all have had enjoyable seasons so far and December finds you awaiting it's cold temperatures, hungry deer filling up for the winter, migrating ducks escaping the frozen North, sounds of beagles giving chase to cottontails and pointers holding steady on wild quail ready to flush.

Video Camera Comparison

A question was proposed on NC Hunt and Fish about the best video camera for someone just starting out in the world of videoing their hunts. Now a days this question is seen multiple times throughout the year on various hunting, fishing and outdoor forums and the answers vary from a cheap $200 JVC and the popular yet increasing in price GoPro to the Canon Vixia line offerings and Sony prosumer and professional level cameras. I've started to accumulate various cameras and decided to put together a short video showing footage one might take with all of them, both before the hunt, during and after. If you have any questions more in-depth about the cameras I owned and compared in the video feel free to drop us line. Ambiguity in Law Confuses Everyone - Update

After another set of emails I did receive final word on the law from one of the enforcement officers. The final word is as follows:

You must hunt from a tree stand at least 6 feet above the ground with all rifles including muzzle loading rifles when hunting deer. You can only hunt from the ground with a pistol or shotgun.

Ambiguity in Law Confuses Everyone

I've been missing in action over the past couple of months as I've had a lot going on. Now that it is hunting season I plan to be writing more! This year I decided to try and get a hunting lease close to where I live to share with my Father who I have not deer hunted with in over 10 years. He currently lives in South Carolina. I found a lease in Nash county, NC and leased it through Base Camp Leasing. It is approximately 30 acres in size and I hope that it pays off for us. I still plan to hunt some public land alone and with Cory ( if we can every sync up our schedules ), however this lease gives me an easy place to take my Father and have a stand set up for him already since our hunting time will be limited.

Preparing for the season I was reviewing the specific section in the regulations guide pertaining to county specific laws. In Nash county the following law is listed:

"Hunt deer with a rifle, except from a stand at least six feet above
the ground."

Now my first thought was: does rifle mean only centerfire rifles, or does it also include muzzleloading rifles? So I did what any good sportsman who wants to abide by the law does...I contacted NCWildLife and asked them. I sent a comment to the email address listed on the website as well as found an email address that was listed on the site for one of the wildlife officers in Nash county. I was surprised when I got two contradicting answers:

1) The rifle restriction for Nash County would apply to all rifles including muzzleloaders (blackpowder rifles) when hunting deer. It would not, as of yet, apply to shotguns with slugs.

2) The height requirement refers to rifles only, not muzzleloaders or shotguns.

One person said yes it does include muzzleloaders, and the other said no it does not. So this all comes back to how you define "rifle". I see other counties specify which type of rifle such as Wake county:

"Take any animal with a centerfire rifle, unless the person is
positioned at least eight feet above the ground."

I've now sent another email to both of the wildlife officers to ask them to please clarify. If enforcement agents are confused on the law then most sportsmen would probably have the same question I did. Hopefully Nash county clarifies the law to remove this ambiguity. For now I'll play it safe and hunt from a stand with everything besides my bow!!

I'll let our readers know the final answer once I have it.

Hunting Season is Upon us!

7 months. It is going on 7 months since I last wrote something and suddenly it's that time of year. The turkeys provided us action in April and May, the fishing was on fire all Spring and into early Summer. Yet here we sit at the end of August staring September right in the face; you know what that means: hunting seasons are fast approaching if not already begun! Bow season opens in North Carolina on the 13th and some sections of Florida and South Carolina already have close to a month of the season in the books. As I sit here in Indiana, amidst so many bean and corn fields that it's hard to get any work done without being on the lookout for deer 24/7 while driving, my desire to be in the woods is increasing every day. Last season was great for me, 6 deer and a huge hog went in the freezer (some of which you read about, others I still need to tell the stories of), yet a close call in December with what would have been my best buck to date left me not burn out for once. Hunting equipment has been upgraded and organized and clothes have been washed and put away. All that remains is continuing to practice with the bow, shoot my guns to make sure POI is still where it needs to be and patiently wait for that first September afternoon I can get out (which will be the 27th at the earliest, darn weddings on opening day and 2-week work rotation out of state!). Domain Expired - Everything is back up and running

With our busy schedules, Cory and I accidentally let the domain for the website expire. We are sorry that the site was down for a couple of week. Everything is now back up and in working order. We hope to bring you some exciting content during the upcoming summer months!

Early 2014 Update

Wow, it has been awhile since myself or Paul has posted. I'd like to blame it on being way too busy, but truth is I needed a break from writing, messing with video and pictures and anything hunting related at all. The 2014 season left me worn out and with a full freezer, some of the tales of each of those animals in there you know. Of course there are a few more you don't know and I intend on changing that in the next few weeks. All told, I ended up having my most successful season ever with 6 deer making their final resting place (5 does and a spike I thought was a doe), along with a huge boar hog, in my freezer. I have stories on the last of the 3 does I'll get to sometime this weekend along with the intense story about my first hog. I'll also be posting the last two parts of my "Season of Missed Opportunities". I originally wanted to do one last entry on it, but one of my final hunts in the Upstate of SC in the days leading up to Christmas deserves it's own entry as it had not one, but TWO missed opportunities, the final one being one of, if not numero uno, the biggest yet to happen in my hunting career. As February turns to March, I'll also have a recap of the 2014 Dixie Deer Classic in Raleigh, NC as I'll be attending it for the first time in 2 or 3 years. Fishing and turkey hunting are dead ahead as well, so be on the lookout for those posts too.
